Jazz in der Burg. Open Air Festival in Dreieich 1998

Martha Cambridge verfügt über eine außergewöhnlich volle und ausdrucksstarke Stimme, die sofort unter die Haut geht. Bei ihr wird am ehesten deutlich, worum es in der Gospel- und Jazzmusik geht. Sie stammt ursprünglich aus Mississippi und sang bereits als Kind in verschiedenen Gospelchören. Schon damals bestach sie durch ihren einzigartigen vollen Klang in ihrer Stimme. Martha hat es sich schon immer zu ihrer Aufgabe gemacht, traditionellen Standards eine ganz neue eigene Farbe zu geben. Ein Beispiel hierfür ist ihre erste Solo-CD "Heart And Soul" - MCAM MCCD 007. Als sie nach Deutschland kam, war sie viele Jahre Mitglied bei den "Jackson Singers" und tourte mit vielen namhaften Gospelgruppen. 1998 gründete Martha Cambridge ihr eigenes Label und ist jetzt auch als Produzentin sehr aktiv.

JAZZ À JUAN
From July 15 2001 To July 23 2001

This year, with the arrival of a new artistic director, Harry Lapp, the 41st international jazz festival of Antibes Juan-Les-Pins is presenting a wide range of jazz performances, and the program includes, jazz, blues, rock'n'roll, Afro-Cuban music...

The festival will open on Sunday July 15th with christian celebration, with the participation of the Insight Gospel Singers. Free concert.

July 15 2001 - 8:30:00 PM   The Nicholas Payton Quintet - Tribute to Louis Armstrong


Nicholas Payton, trumpet - Tima Warfield, tenor saxophone - Anthony Wonsey, piano - Reuben Rogers, double bass - Adonis Rose, drums.

Nicholas Payton, born in New Orleans in 1973, started by playing in brass bands... In 1990, noticed by Clark Terry, he receives the Wynton Marsalis prize at the "Louis Armstrong" trumpet competion.
His last album, "Dear Louis", to be released April 24th on Verve, is a tribute to Satchmo.

The story of the band Les Gigolos started in december 1996, when the Quartet Megaswing invited Patrick Bacqueville to play at the Parisian club "Le Bilboquet". They play three Louis Prima songs, and from there, they decide to form a band, similar to the one directed by Louis Prima in the 60's, under the name of Witnesses. With the arrival of Christophe Davot and Michel Bonnet, the band gets bigger and becomes Les Gigolos.

At 31, American saxophonist Joshua Redman, son of Dewey Redman, saxophonist of Keith Jarrett, he's an accomplished artist.

Branford Marsalis, born in 1960, is the eldest son of the Marsalis family. Branford (alto, soprano & tenor saxophones) has, like his brothers Wynton (trumpet), Delfeayo (trombone) and the youngest Jason (drums), had a great teacher, his father Ellis (pianist).
After having played a lot of pop and funk music (with Sting...), he dedicates himself to jazz in 1980 and records his first album in 1983...
His last album "Contemporary Jazz" has received a Grammy Award for the best jazz album of the year.

Dianne Reeves was still a teenager when legendary trumpeter Clark Terry discovered her, when she was singing in the Big Band of her school. But it is only in 1976, at the age of 20, that she starts her professional career. Her first album "Dianne Reeves" will be released in 1987, after having toured with Billy Childs, from the Night Flight, Phil Moore and Sergio Mendes, and recorded for other artists. Her second album, "For Every Heart", is recorded with Harry Bellafonte in 1985. She mixes jazz with reggae and rhythms rooted in the world music...
She has just released an album in tribute to the great Sarah Vaughan, The Calling for the Blue Note label...

Lucky Peterson started his career at six years old ! Famous producer Willie Dixon, signs him in 1971, and an album is soon released. The album hit title, "1-2-3" allows Lucky Peterson to be on top of the charts. In parallel, he pursues his musical training, playing with bluesmen passing in his father's club, like Lightnin' Hopkins and Jimmy Reed. Hired by Little Milton in the Mighty All Stars, in 1981, he takes the direction of the orchestra less than free months after his arrival, and tours in the States and in Europe. Since, Lucky Peterson has become a major blues artist.

Frank Sinatra Jr has studied music at the university of Southern California, to become pianist and conductor. But singing has soon caught up with him... He has performed in many prestigious venues in the United States, Canada, Japan and in England. Contrary to his sister Nancy, Frankie Jr. never had the sucess he deserved, and today his talent, and his voice - reminding the voice of his father's - is rediscovered...
The Woody Herman Orchestra brings back to life the legend of Woody Herman (1913-1987),  his orchestra, and it is only fair that saxophonist Frank Tiberi, his long time accomplice, keeps alive this tradition...
